The Ram saw an entire generation of Full Size pickups that wasn't changed very much from 1994 to 2001. Although there were some changes for the 2001 Dodge Ram, overall styling was very similar to that of the new model introduced in 94'. That in no way means though that the Ram was anything other than capable as a powerful work truck. Owners of one of these trucks have a full size pickup that can haul and tow more payloads than just about an other similar truck offered for that model year. The only area where the Ram falls behind competitors in fuel economy.
In the full size pickup segment there are many great vehicles available including the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ford F-Series trucks, and the Toyota Tundra. As mentioned above the area that the 2001 Dodge Ram excels is as a heavy duty work truck that allows owners to get even the toughest of jobs done. Trim packages offered for this model year include the LT, ST, SLT, and Laramie. Basic work trucks are the LT package which really doesn't come with all the extra frills available on other models. Expect one of these models to not have power windows or locks, a basic stereo system, and only a few different interior fabrics to choose from. Note however that just because these trucks aren't fully loaded on the inside they certainly don't lose any of the characteristics that make them powerful.
Moving up in refinement consumers can choose the ST which comes with a lot more features to make the ride enjoyable. Standard on these models are power windows and locks, CD players, AC, power adjustable driver seats, cruise control, and other additional items. As the upper level model Laramie trucks came with a lot of standard features along with many additional items that could be added. Standard for these trucks are full power accessories, an expanded center console, and an electronic transfer case on 4 wheel drive equipped trucks.
Most trucks were offered with the option of either 2 or 4 wheel drive with rear wheel drive being the standard. Cabin styles offered with the regular 2 door style with no rear seat, an extended cab with 4 doors where the rear ones could only be opened when the front ones were, and a Quad Cab that had 4 doors that each could be opened independently of each other. Bed lengths ranged from 6.5 feet to an even 8 feet.
Engines offered for the 2001 Dodge Ram were a 3.7 liter V6, a 4.7 liter V8, and a 5.7 liter V8. Most of the basic models with 2 wheel drive came with the smaller 3.7 liter engine which is more than adequate for highway driving and owners who don't need to haul extremely large loads. Trucks equipped with 4 wheel drive or are to be used for get the most hauling and towing require one of the larger V8 engines. For the best experience it is highly recommended that the 5.7 liter V8 be used. Fuel economy is slightly less than that of most comparable competitor models and ranged from 13 mpg city to 19 mpg highway.
Overall these trucks are very capable and made solid from there quality engineering. Buyers looking for something that can haul extreme loads must consider one of these trucks.
